Spain was province of North Africa which was incorporated in the Umayyad Empire. The writer has dedicated 8 out of 24 chapters to the political and social life before the arrival of Abdur Rehman in Spain. Abdur Rehman after ascending Spanish throne threw away the title of caliph and adopted the title Ameer.
This act symbolized his new Umayyad caliphate in Spain distant from that of Abbasid Baghdad which was symbol of global Muslim Ummah. The book sheds great light on the social structure of Spain under Muslim rule. From the diverse populations of Arabs and Berbers, Yamanites and Muzarites, Gothic Christians and Catholics, Non-Muslims and Muslims living together to turning against one another heads lay the framework for comprehending the complexities involved in Spain.
Abdur Rehman constantly struggled to keep his kingdom intact amid contending parties claiming his throne. Words are carefully crafted and interweaved to make impression on readers mind with hefty information. At the same time chronological order of events remains etched in the memory by referencing the events in later chapters. This feat of book makes it stand out.
However few pages are devoted about the cultural life of Spain. Abdur Rehman was fierce warrior, excellent administrator, clever political opponent and at the same time kind and generous king to his subjects. He taught the true meaning of tolerance and interfaith harmony in his reign while at the same time striking terror in the heart of his opponents. Apart from that there are few spelling mistakes and editing errors in book. Abdur Rehman earned this titled from his arch-rival Caliph Mansur of Abbasid dynasty.
As for Abdul Malik he had the backing of a powerful faction. He made the cities prosperous, organized armies and founded mighty empire, aided only by the excellence of his judgment and the strength of his perseverance.
